The Beheaded Rooster

The Beheaded Rooster (2006)

Shooting in Transylvania, Romania and Vienna from Aug. 28 to Oct. 5, 2006 the film is a moving coming of age story in a time of extreme change: On August 23, 1944 in a small city in Romanian Transylvania, the 16 year old Felix Goldschmidt awaits his classmates for their traditional Exitus Party (school graduation). However, this very day the kingdom of Romania takes leave of its ally of many years - Nazi Germany - thus ending the 800 year old, highly successful story of ethnic German immigration at the feet of the Carpathian Mountains. It is a great story of young people’s blindness to the rise of Fascism, the destruction of bourgeois values, a first love and shattered friendships.

At the core of the dramatic events, is Felix (David Zimmerschied) and his three friends:  the Jewish Gisela (Alicja Bachleda), who is expelled from the German School, Hans Adolf (Axel Moustache), a chimney-sweep’s son consumed by ambition and Alfa Sigrid (Ioana Teodora Jacob), the flirtatious, morbid daughter of a noble Saxon landowner.

The colourful round dance of characters from this multi-cultural world, in which Germans, Romanians, Hungarians, Jews and Roma lived side by side “The Beheaded Rooster” is the first feature film about the fate of the Transylvanian Saxons. The film “The Beheaded Rooster” will illustrate how the children’s private lives are devoured by great historical events, thus causing them to lose their homeland.
